North American Clean Energy: Flange milling for US offshore wind turbines
North American Clean Energy with exclusive article by CNC Onsite on flange milling for US offshore wind turbines
Søren Kellenberger, sales director of CNC Onsite, authored the article on the company’s precision flange milling for offshore wind turbines in the July 2024 issue of North American Clean Energy magazine, North American Clean Energy July/August 2024 by North American Clean Energy – Issuu
Søren describes how the company’s in-house developed machine “Goliath” works to mill flanges for offshore tower bases, monopiles and transition pieces of up to 12 meters in diameter with two-millimeter accuracy.
Ring flange connections are safety critical mechanical joints within the wind turbine structure. However, the increasing dimensions of wind turbines create engineering challenges for large flange connections that join wind turbine towers to their foundations. To prevent bolts loosening – a critical issue associated with significant repair costs and downtime – the connecting flanges must be flat to within a few millimeters. This is achieved with Goliath’s the article explains.
